Political Hebraism in Leviathan: Hobbes on I Samuel 8
Author explores Thomas Hobbes's political reading of Hebrew Bible, taking I Samuel 8 as its focus. In order to bring forth Hobbes's particular reading, Biblical account of the establishment of the Israelite monarchy is first assessed from both rabbinic and Christian perspective. Author shows that Hobbes uses the Old Testament as a corroboration of his theory of state sovereignty. Furthermore, he strives to prove that God's kingdom was a real kingdom that existed up to the time of Samuel in which secular and ecclesiastical power was united in the hands of the civil sovereign. Finally, Hobbes criticises the theocratic model of the Jewish state from the standpoint of his own theory of the state.
