Elektrokemijski dokaz merkapto spojeva u vodotopljivoj frakciji finih lebdećih atmosferskih čestica morskog područja
Environmetal cycling of S species biologically produced via various processes involving algae in marine regions as well as S species originating from anthropogenic sources has taken on a great importance due to their involvement in the formation of fine atmospheric aerosols and impact on acid precipitation, human health and global climate effects. While organosulfur (OS) compounds have been proposed as products of secondary organic aerosol formation, a question remains as to the magnitude of their contribution to aerosol organic mass as well as to the understanding of their composition, formation, and transformation in the atmosphere. The strong interaction between S species and mercury (Hg) serves a background for electroanalytical characterization of OS in water soluble fraction of fine marine aerosols (MA) at the Hg electrode. The methodology is based on the tendency of reduced S species (RSS) to deposit HgS layer and on the interaction of some OS species with the Hg electrode resulting in the formation of Hg-S complexes during an accumulation step at the deposition potential around -0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). During the potential scan towards negative values, layers of HgS and Hg-S complexes can be reduced between -0.45 and -0.70 V, with facilitated reduction of Hg-S complexes occuring more positively than HgS reduction. In natural aquatic systems thiols represent a portion of a pool of RSS. Thiols may be produced biologically as a result of sulfate reduction or biodegredation of organic matter. Among thiols, the presence of 3- mercapto propionate (3-MP) in natural waters is mainly discussed by biochemical demethylation of DMSP and by formation through a chemical addition of sulfide to acrylate. In this work 3-mercapto propionic acid (3-MPA) has been chosen as a model OS compound in order to decsribe the behaviour of OS species on a Hg drop electrode and to quantify the OS present in the fine MA. The natural samples of water soluble fraction of fine MA were studied by voltammetric methods and recorded electrochemical signal was assigned to the presence of mercapto compounds. The obtained peak was further calibrated with 3-MPA model solution and the behaviour of 3-MP at the Hg electrode and its mixture with sulphide in 0.55 M NaCl electrolyte, will be described.
