Preparation and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedical applications
Metal or metal oxide nanoparticles such as superparamagnetic iron oxides nanoparticles are most commonly used for magnetic drug applications. These nanoparticles are nontoxic, biodegradable and biocompatible. One of the most used is magnetite nanoparticles. They emerge as the ones having effectively controlled particle size and surface chemistry, enhanced permeation, flexibility, solubility and release of therapeutically active agents to attain the target and specific activity at a predetermined rate and time. [1] The structural and morphological characterizations of magnetite nanoparticles were conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Three structurally different flavonoids were incorporated into mesoporous nanoparticles of magnetite. Successful loading of flavonoids was confirmed using ζ-potential measurements and UV/Vis spectrophotometry.
