Microbial Detoxification of Polluted Soils and Agroecosystem
Microbial detoxification is becoming a powerful remediation technique with many advantages, including not only the low cost and the absence of by-products but also the ubiquity and wide selection of available microorganisms, their rapid characterization, reuse, as well as the possibility of in situ and ex situ application. In this chapter, along with a brief overview of the basics of microbial soil remediation and the necessary prerequisites for its successful implementation, more emphasis will be placed on the use of this technique in the decontamination of soils polluted with agricultural activities and coal combustion products as well as in the biotransformation of coal (e.g., low-rank coal). Considering the general use of coal as an energy source, the footprint of activities related not only to coal extraction but also to its processing, application and by-products disposal is found worldwide. As such sites represent potential release points for various organic and inorganic pollutants, there is a growing interest in developing environmentally friendly methods for their removal. This chapter attempts to fill the gaps in knowledge on the subject, providing insights into the mechanisms of detoxification and transformation, the diversity of microbial communities, and the overall potential for their application in soil remediation.
