Introduction

This is an introduction to the special section of Research Evaluationon on research funding and the dynamics of science dealing with some of the most relevant issues of a two-day workshop organized by SSTNET/ESA and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University. Overall, the workshop has offered a deeper insight into the relation between research funding & science dynamics, especially academic performance, evaluation outcomes, careers patterns, scientific competition and epistemic outcomes. Included studies are conducted in different countries (Spain, Denmark and The Netherlands) and researched the impact of funding on the university level (Cruz-Castro, Benitez-Amado and Sanz- Menéndez) as well as on the individual level (Bloch and Schneider ; Waaijer, Heyer and Kuli).
