Perception of Women in Politics: Croatian Experience

Gender shouldn’t be a factor in whether or not person can be a great political leader. A person's leadership potential should depend on their individual ability and personal achievements. However, women aren't encouraged enough to take on leadership roles, especially political ones, as often as their male counterparts, contributing to an imbalance of gender equality. Insufficient number of women in parliaments is evident in nearly all countries of the world. In 2018, there was only 24 percentage of women in parliamentary seats. Unfortunately, Croatia is lagging behind Europe and the USA in this respect. Data from Croatian Bureau of Statistics show that the number of women in politics is on the fall ; just 12, 6 % of women currently hold a seat in the Croatian Parliament which is almost 10 percentage lower then e.g. in 2000. With this falling number of women in Croatian politics, the problem is also their perception in the Croatian public. This paper deals with political discourse of Croatian president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. The aim is to establish the perception of her performances on different political and economic topics in Croatian public. The hypothesis is that her performances are perceived and commented by the public very differently than the ones of her male colleagues. The research shows that the focus is mostly moved from her discourse to, for example her appearance. Meanwhile, the public perception of male politicians remains focused on what was said.
