CAUSES AND MECHANISMS OF IMMUNE SUPPRESSION IN CHICKENS
Immune suppression of chickens is a continuing health and economic problem in the production of poultry. Whereas there are many causes, immune suppressive viruses and mycotoxins in feed are the two most important. Immune suppression caused by mycotoxins can be controlled, but that caused by viral infections is complicated because the infections are difficult to prevent. The mechanisms for immune suppression are discussed briefly, and a proposal is made to reduce losses from viral infections by using a molecular test for immune status to identify chickens that can benefit from immune supportive therapy.
