Multilingualism in Teacher Education in Croatia
In this chapter, we firstly provide an overview of multilingualism in Croatia, taking into account both the current situation of linguistic diversity and the historical background to language use in the country. The second part of the chapter is devoted to the organisation of teacher education in Croatia. In this section we describe how teacher education is structured in terms of different program levels and study programmes. The third part is concerned with multilingualism in teacher education specifically. Based on an analysis of the curricula of teacher training study programmes, we discuss how the findings show significant differences among study programmes in terms of presence and type of multilingual content. The final part addresses the implications that current practices have on teacher education in Croatia by taking into account the (linguistic) needs of Croatian society, as well as contemporary standards and developments in pedagogy and teaching.
