Establishing the criteria for building comparable corpora in cross-cultural research on graduates' academic writing
Research on English-medium academic writing in non-Anglophone academic contexts has been increasingly important given that publishing in English, as a predominant language of scientific publication, has become a requirement for establishing and advancing scholars' career. A pressure to publish internationally may be especially challenging for non-Anglophone novice writers who not only need to have advanced English language competence but they also need to be skilled in native English academic writing conventions which may often depart from those of their native languages. The present paper aims to illustrate the first stage of a study on the strategies used for expressing authorial presence and attitude in graduates' theses by Croatian and Serbian novice writers as contrasted with those of their peers in native English settings. More specifically, it presents the initial level of the methodological framework of the study, which is broadly in line with the model for contrastive rhetoric research as proposed by Connor & Moreno (2005). Particular focus is placed on the challenges encountered in establishing the criteria for the compilation of the comparable corpora. The guidelines used in designing the current methodological framework may be adopted in similar cross-cultural research on written academic discourse.
