Isotope labeling in mechanochemical milling reactions
In the last several years, the exploration of alternative and efficient synthetic methods put ball milling reactions under the spotlight. Ball milling exerts compression, shearing, and friction to a solid reaction mixture often leading to fast, solvent-free, and controllable synthesis. Ball milling remained for long a "black-box" approach, but the recent introduction of in situ monitoring methods provided tools to study the reactions at the fundamental level. In this work, with the use of isotope- labeled solids and tandem in situ monitoring, we show that ball milling overcomes inherently slow solid-state diffusion through continuous comminution and growth of milled particles where the whole of milled solid particles became accessible to the surface and other milled particles. That is extended to the milling between the solid and liquid additive, using it for efficient deuterium labeling of solids. This methodology reveals the fundamental nature of mechanochemical reactions and the way of studying these reactions at the molecular and bulk levels.
