New development dirrections of viticulture and wine-production in Istria

Viticulture in Istria has always been and will be in the future, treated as the most important branch of agriculture. In Istria there are 10.138 family householdings with 6.963 ha of vineyard, deals with viticulture and wine production. Viticulture exceeds economical frames and assumes a significant culturological-sociological role, enriches the area (central Istria terraces) and with the appropriate choice of technology prevents it degradation. In the last ten years, important technical-technological changes have accured, but also changes in approaching viticulture as an activity which has to respect the principles of sustainable development, economic demands and environmental protection, all basis for a regional development strategy. in the specific ecological, economic and social conditions in Istria, area protection and the planning of development is a complex, dynamic and permanent process, which demands a multidisciplinary approach. Besides, the mentioned issue is of the global, not regional character and requires the application of the acquires knowledge and standards from all arround us. The most important technical-technological guidelines which affect the future viticulture and wine-production development are: quantitative and especially qualitative increase of production with the aim of increasing the economical efficiency and profitability ; perserving and enriching the environment as the basic resource of Istria, especially from the aspect of tourist valorisation ; the choice of autochtonous and already acclimatised varieties best suitable for representing specific localities ; the choice of technological solutions that acknowledge the actual socio-demographic evidences (human labour deficiency during summer months, the population staying in rural areas and other demands (soil erosion protection, pollution of surface and underground waters).
