Routes of Travels and Points of Encounters Observed Through Musical Borrowings: The Case of Giovanni Giornovichi / Ivan Jarnović, an 18th-Century Itinerant Violin Virtuoso
During the 18th century many artists were “on the move”, searching for a better job or a benevolent benefactor, and touring towards attractive centres: noble palaces, rich churches, bustling towns and market places. Although their means of travel were often reduced to a bumpy peasant’s wagon or even their own feet, their search for a better life urged them to continue their journeys. The paper gives results of the analyses of a case study: Giovanni Giornovichi, a migrant virtuoso, published a series of virtuoso compositions, influenced by other composers and their works, but also influenced others.
