Mechanochemical synthesis of polymorphic metal-organic frameworks and their topology transformationION
Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of porous materials due to their exceptional chemical and structural tunability. MOFs based on zirconium clusters and carboxylic ligands solved the issues related to the stability and applicability of MOFs in real conditions. Zr-MOFs based on tetratopic ligands are particularly interesting because they occur in more topologies which can serve to tune their applicability. However, the preparation of their pure phases is still a challenge, and often these polymorphs occur in concomitant mixtures which are hard or impossible to separate. Herein we present controlling the polymorphism in 12-coordinated porphyrin-based zirconium MOFs using liquid-assisted ball milling. Topology transfer from the pure cubic phase, MOF-525 (ftw), to pure hexagonal phase, PCN-223 (shp), were revealed using in situ monitoring by high energy powder x-ray diffraction. Electron spin resonance (ESR) data of these pure-phase MOFs revealed them as suitable candidates for advanced spintronics applications.
