Data-driven Approaches for e-Mobility: Finances, Automotive Software, and Contextual Routing

There are many critical areas in which researchers are proposing solutions for securing sustainable energy future. In particular, the transportation sector is the prime example of such an area as it is seen as one of the main contributors to the overall global greenhouse gas emissions. Broadly speaking, clean technologies are seen as crucial for facilitating sustainable development. Within the transportation sector, clean technologies are used to implement so- called e-Mobility, i.e., the development of electric vehicles (EVs). Even though EVs are still not widely used, there are some clues that this will change soon. For example, a recent report by the International Energy Agency offers a short-term outlook on the global electric car stock. Concretely, it is reported that the cumulative number of EVs, after only 0.4 million EVs were sold in 2013, passed the 3 million vehicle threshold in 2017. When considering a long-term view on EVs, experts from McKinsey Energy Insights forecast that by 2030 every fifth car sold globally will be an EV, which is a substantial increase from the forecasted value of 3% EVs sold globally by 2020. Herein, we list down some of the important challenges and data-driven approaches related to e-Mobility with a special focus being placed on the emerging research field of electric vehicles.
