SOX2 expression shifts during fetal development in the human prefrontal cortex
Cerebral cortex is a result of histogenetic processes, i.e. proliferation, migration, differentiation, specifications and synaptogenesis, regulated by differential gene expression. Proliferation occurs in the proliferative zones from neural stem cells. Neurons migrate from the proliferative zones to their final destination forming transient lamination:ventricular (VZ), subventricular (SVZ), intermediate (IZ), subplate (SP), cortical plate (CP) and marginal zone (MZ). Gene SOX2 encodes the transcription factor critically involved in cortical development, i.e. maintaining the identity of neural stem cells. However, SOX2 expression pattern during the human neocortical development remains elusive.
