State Authorities and the Heritage of Noble Families of Eastern Croatia
From the 18th to mid-20th century noble families who owned valuable art collections lived in Eastern Croatia. Most of these collections were created by importing works of art from European cultural centers, but the works of domestic artists were also collected. Between these collections and the political and state bodies there are a number of complex relationships spanning over several centuries. The topic we are trying to present in this paper is related to several aspects of art and politics. Art collecting activities of noble families from eastern Croatia and the long history of their collections have been explored – both private collections and artworks in the holdings of important state institutions, which have the status of national artistic heritage. Although their collections during and after the Second World War, and also in the Homeland War, have experienced physical and symbolical destruction, the new socio- political relations have brought them back to the attention of the professional community and general public.
