Treatment of complications associated with advanced stage of Alzheimer dementia

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease with three stages of disease progression in clinical course: early, mild and late stage. Late stage is characterized by severe cognitive impairment especially in speech and communication, progressive loss of motor abilities, severe behavioral disturbances and personality changes followed by medical complications. Therapeutic goal in the advanced stage of Alzheimer disease is not to cure the underlying disease but to provide relief of symptoms and: 1. better quality of life rather than longer life 2. optimal procedures: a) daily activities (nutrition, personal hygiene) b) care of behavioral problems and personality changes c) care of medical complications The aim of this paper is to give recommendations for choosing optimal procedures and pharmacotherapeutic approach to complications of advanced stage Alzheimer disease based on medical indications following evidence based medicine.
