Limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation for recurrent pterygium treatment
Purpose: To examine the usefulness of limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation (LCAT) for recurrent pterygium treatment. Patients and Methods: Eighteen eyes with advanced recurrent pterygium underwent LCAT. All eyes were previously treated by minimum of two times either by simple excision (n=16) or conjunctival rotation autograft (n=2). In three eyes (16.7%) symblepharon was present at the time of surgery ; therefore LCAT was combined with amniotic membrane transplantation. Limbal-conjunctival autograft was taken from supero-lateral part of the same eye and trensferred to the area where pterygium was excided. Minimal follow-up time was 8 months. Results: No intraoperative complications occured. In 16 eyes (88.9%) pterygium did not recurre during follow-up time. In two eyes, pterygium regrowth was recorded 5 and 6 months after surgery. In three eyes with combined symblepharon formation remission of both pterygium and symblepharon growth was obtained. Conclusion: LCAT seems to be promising and safe procedure in recurrent pterygium treatment.
