Sažetak
Neoplastic ovarian disease in dogs is uncommon, but may affect health, fertility or even the life of the animal. Classification of these tumors is primarly based upon the histologic appearance of tumor cells and their embryologic origin. Primary ovarian tumors are classified as epitelial, sex cord stromal (which frequently produce reproductive hormones associated with endocrine clinical symptoms like pyometra, non-regenerative anemia and trombocytopenia), germ cell, mixed or mesenchymal tumors. The study investigated incidence of histological types of 27 canine ovarian tumors analyzed at the Department of Veterinary Pathology from 2009 to 2018. Age and breed of all dogs were retrieved from the Departments database. Most freqently diagnosed tumors were sex cord stromal tumors (48%), followed by epithelial tumors (33%), germ cell tumors (8%), mixed tumors (7%) and mesenchymal tumors (4%). Most frequently affected breed was Mixed-breed (11 bitches, 41%). Other affected breeds were Labrador Retriever (3, 10%), Tornjak, German Shepherd, unknown breed (2, 7% each), and Boxer, Irish Setter, Yorkshire Terrier, Standard Schnauzer, Maltese, American Bulldog, American Staffordshire Terrier (1, 4% each). Average age of dogs diagnosed with ovarian tumors was 10, 7 years. Ovarian tumors present rare disease of the ovary in dogs, which was also noted in the current research as only 27 tumors were diagnosed in a 10-year period. Possible explanation is that many dogs are neutered at an early age, hence pathology of ovary can not develop. Further, after an ovariohysterectomy, reproductive organs are often not submitted for histology, due to financial restrictions of owners. Tumors were mostly diagnosed in Mixed-breed dogs, which is presumably a consequence of the predominancy of this breed in Croatia. Although ovarian tumors in dogs are uncommon, they should present differential diagnosis in bitches with suspected reproductive pathology.
