Research Approach to Learning Nature and Society in the Kopački Rit Nature Park

The research approach to teaching and learning in the Curriculum of the Nature and Society Teaching Course (2019) is integrated into all concepts and in different ways. Research in immediate reality is particularly emphasized to encourage active, research and experiential learning. By applying active learning methods, the students will develop critical thinking and metacognition. They will observe and collect data, describe the world around them, using their senses and make measurements, thus applying active learning methods. Out-of-class teaching or learning in nature is a method in which certain parts of the curriculum are located outside the school walls. The Kopački Rit Nature Park is the best equipped classroom located in nature. It is abundant in animal and plant organisms on land, water and air. Natural resources of forests, water, pastures, meadows, ponds, trails are the original reality in which each student can discover and learn according to their interests. The aim of the paper is to present the methods of active learning and teaching of the content of different concepts of the subject Nature and Society according to the Curriculum (2019), by emphasizing the research approach. The paper will show specific examples of activities that students can explore in Kopački Rit and will present their connection with the subject concepts and the stated outcomes according to the Curriculum of the school subject Nature and Society (2019). The purpose is to promote learning in nature by exploring and connecting with different life situations, with particular emphasis on cross- cutting themes of sustainable development, entrepreneurship and civic education. The work of students at the Kopački Rit Nature Park enriches teaching, contributes to greater efficiency of educational work, thus the acquired knowledge has greater stability and permanence. Forests, meadows, pastures, bodies of water (lakes, canals, ponds) and instructional paths are large, well-equipped classrooms located in nature, whose richness and diversity of flora and fauna needs to be met by active learning, organizing classes by integrating the content of different teaching subjects. Learning outside the classroom by doing research in Kopački Rit will allow students to observe critically, understand the interdependence of the original nature and people, study scientific content and learn about the natural heritage of the homeland. In nature, it enables students to learn by fully experiencing and understanding life and teaching content in the immediate reality. Students are allowed to observe natural phenomena and changes and to notice certain cause and effect relationships. The importance of nature protection and active involvement of students in concrete actions is emphasized. The students are instructed to study natural sciences and to apply the obtained results in practice. Teaching is focused on the pursuit and creation, which is one of the ways of changing traditional teaching. This approach to learning emphasizes the integration of knowledge gained through the content of various courses and contributes to the formation of a comprehensive and versatile personality.
