Democratic Legitimacy and Substantive Equality in the Informal Political Public Sphere

The paper addresses Estlund's epistemic difference principle, accroding to which unequal distribution of political input and influence in the informal political sphere can be justified if this simoultaneously increases the total level of input, and thus the quality of decisions produced. The paper argues both that this principle violates fair equality of political liberties, as well as that such unequal distribution of political influence might in fact have epistemically damaging features.
