Camaraderie at the Table: Community Catering in the Time of the Yugoslav First Five-Year Plan
Soon after the end of World War II, Yugoslav authorities started to develop the system of community catering with special subsidised restaurants for workers. Placed within factories and firms, as well in public spaces in city centres, these restaurants had an important role in the making of a new socialist citizen, but also in a successful implementation of the Yugoslav first five-year plan. Good organization, skilled staff and nutritious menus were seen as preconditions for higher productivity of labour. Camaraderie between the staff and subscribers was promoted as an ideal. The paper is based on archival records of the relevant federal authorities, the Alliance of Trade Unions of Yugoslavia and other sources.
