Advice for Family Members of Military Personnel in International Military Operations
The purpose of this handbook is to show how to deal with family changes after one of its members deployed to an international mission. During the peacetime period, the Croatian army turned to new tasks in which participation in international military operations has an extremely important role. Our country was first involved in one international operation in October 1999 (only three years after the end of the Croatian Homeland War) when 10 of our officers joined the UN peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone. Since then, our military observers have also been involved in other peacekeeping operations. The next step in the peacekeeping operations was the participation of our troops as part of the international military force. Today, memebers of Croatian Armed Forces effectively and professionally carry out their tasks in international missions on almost all continents. In this way, the Croatian army contributes to the building of international peace and security, and thus directly builds and strengthens the position and reputation of the Republic of Croatia and its armed forces in the world. Throughout the previous experience, the importance of psychological preparation and support for participants in international military operations and their families has been confirmed. This manual is part of a psychological preparation that will enable family members to take on the new situation and to pass through it with the least negative consequences on the personal and family level.
