Development potential of passenger and baggage handling process at airports
In 2017, commercial aviation carried 4.1 billion passengers and moved 61.5 million tonnes of freight across the globe. With the falling in air transport cost, and the advancement in the aviation industry, it is forecast that over the next 30 years, the aviation industry will grow 4.5% year-on-year (passenger traffic). Some of the technological advancement that the aviation industry has utilized or is looking at includes The Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Prescriptive Maintenance, Augmented Reality, Drones, etc. These advancements are catalysts in increasing the airport infrastructure efficiency leading to freeing some unused capacity at the airport, otherwise reducing the capacity bottleneck caused of the capacity. On the other hand, airlines and airports must act, together, to enhance the bottleneck effects of capacity. In solving this problem, the quality of the passenger handling process at airports is significantly contributed. By utilizing both landside initiatives (relates to customer- centric) and airside initiative (relates to actual aircraft turnaround) authors ensures that the airport capacity is further increased through efficient systems. These initiatives include Standardizing Information Change, Collaborative decision-making, Indoor positioning systems (Beacons technology), Biometrics, Robots, Baggage Technology, One ID by IATA and Fast Travel by IATA. Numerous factors affect the quality of the airport passenger handling process. In this paper, by applying general and special scientific methods of cognition, the authors research the quality factors of the airport passenger handling process with a focus on understanding their influence on the quality of the airport passenger handling process.
