EVALUATION OF PAVEMENT BEARING CAPACITY BY FWD - EXAMPLE FROM PRACTICE

Recently, nondestructive testing has become unavoidable when assessing pavement condition and selecting the pavement maintenance strategy. By using FWD and GPR in assessing the bearing capacity of the road structure, it is possible to obtain valuable information about the pavement structural capacity, as well as the performance characteristics. Both devices are very useful tools for project prioritization purposes and estimating the required network and project level maintenance resources. The deflection measurement by Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is one of the widely accepted nondestructive ways of determining the pavement bearing capacity, as well as estimating the required overlay thickness and hence it is a precision tool for planning or assessing the current and future construction budgets requirements. On the other hand, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is the only tool that a highway agency can use to create a complete layer thickness database in the most efficient manner possible. By estimating the pavement structure layer thickness and its stiffness characteristics, it is possible to predict more reliable maintenance strategies and thus define the needs, which again results in the cost-effective use of the available funds. The paper presents the Croatian experience in pavement evaluation with FWD and GPR on the A2 motorway, Zagreb - Macelj. The measurements with the aim of determining the bearing capacity of the pavement, as well as the assessment of the necessary rehabilitation measures, were carried out for both driving directions, for driving, overtaking and emergency lanes. The paper presents the results of the measurements and the conducted analyses for the Jankomir - Zaprešić section, that were the basis for the design of the rehabilitation project. From the presented, it can be concluded that the project level testing employing FWD and GPR is a worthwhile technically sound program that will provide information on bearing capacities of an in-service pavement. Both, the FWD and GPR data are recommended to be a part of the pavement management system, together with the data from the visual inspection, as well as the automated collected data about the international roughness index (IRI), rut depth and skid resistance.
