The Role of Biological (Dys)function in Mental Disorders
One of the central problems in the philosophy of psychiatry is the definition of mental disorder. Some authors argue that a/the key component of the definition should be the notion of biological dysfunction. The idea is that it can offer an objective, factual, scientific grounding of mental disorder and as such fight relativism. However, some issues arise. One such issue is that such accounts fail to be value free so that at this point there is scepticism about the value free theoretical notion of disorder covered by biological dysfunction. It seems we need to help ourselves to normative concepts such as harm.
