Modern Approaches to the History of Philosophy
The title question of this conference, which is Does Philosophy Need Its History? will be examined from the perspective of Renaissance philosophy. The question concerning the importance of the his-tory of philosophy for contemporary philosophy has two antagonistic positions. The one is that phi-losophy can be understood only as a conglomerate of its history and its present ; the other is that the history of philosophy brings nothing for a philosophical activity, philosophy understood as an act of free thinking which requires no past references. Be it as it may, since the times of Ernst Cassirer’s publications on the beginnings of the 20th century we can witness an ever growing interest for the history of philosophy, and especially for Renaissance philosophy. What has changed in the approach to the history of philosophy? To answer this question I will examine the sources used by contempo-rary historians of philosophy, as well as their initial positions (pre-judices, Vor-urteile) from which they choose material as well as subjects of their research.
