Characterization of the Materials Used in the Miniature Painting by Juraj Julije Klović
We report on investigation of the miniature border design 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' surrounding the drawing on paper, attributed to Juraj Julije Klović (known as Giulio Clovio). Originally, it was part of an illuminated and painted manuscript on vellum dated to the first half of the 16th century. The aim of the investigation has been to study the materials used by the author and to determine state of preservation of the painting, while taking into account the materials and effects of previous conservation treatments. the technical investigation and characterization of the materials were performed by various means, including photographic examination, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE) analysis. XRF and PIXE have been used for characterization and differentiation of the pigments to address issues of attribution and conservation. The results obtained in this study give an insight in Klović's palette and indicated the following pigments: blue (smalt and ultramarine), red (vermilion and red ochre), green (Cu based pigments), yellow (lead-tin yellow), brown (mixture of Fe and Mn oxides), and white (lead white and calcium carbonate).
