Petar Zoranić's Midsummer Night's Dream
There is an old belief that dreams can reveal future thruths, as prophecys or prognosis (Kott). Petar Zoranić infused this kind of belief, of dreams as prophetic, in novel Planine (The Mountains, 1536) by giving the dream motif a major role in structuring most of the metamorphoses ("pritvori") in the novel. In his musings on love and nature, Zoranić uses the association to midsummer and the dream motif as a narrative thechnique for traversing the world of nature and love. Matching that, Shakespeare's multiplication of situations and doubling of love couples with significant variations, is rooted in sixteenth-century Renaissance literature, in which Zoranić also takes part by skillfully affirming the expected (Renaissance) structures. Going over the dream motif in various literary poetics confirms the historical and stylistic concepts of art.
