Rijeka: Plans, Typology, Architects
For Rijeka the World War I marked the end of its strong economic rise, although Rijeka had not regressed under the Italian rule. Indeed, former Italy took care of the industrial reconstruction, government subsidies were used to encourage settling of Italians, the state largely functioned as a welfare social state and was very modern in designing the city that in 1932 regarding the number of inhabitants reaches pre- war situation. All phenomena inherent to architectural accomplishments of the time on a global scale were reflected in the inter-war architecture of Rijeka, regardless of its importance and status at the national level and political influences. It is a time of stylistic upheavals in which parallel with the emergence of modern style we can also observe the continuity of traditional expression which is at the larger scales witnessed by the neoclassical direction of New tradition that is affirmed in many countries not only in Europe but also in Italy or Rijeka, whose architectural scene is characterized by its blend of the old and the new.
