Resilience of High School Adolescents in the Republic of Croatia

This paper is a part of the scientific project carried out by members of the Department of Behavior Disorders on the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb, The Republic of Croatia. Intentions of the researchers involved in the project have been to detect important personal characteristics of resilient adolescents, and to determine which resilient factors exist in their environments &#8211 ; family, peers, school and local community. Hypotheses of this part of the project are: (1) there are personal characteristics of resilient adolescent in high schools in the Republic of Croatia and those characteristics are in relation with characteristics of their environment ; (2) there are statistically significant differences regarding place of living (small towns, cities and the capital). In the random-stratificated sample there are 980 students aged 15 and 16 from 10 high schools across the Republic of Croatia. In the paper, the results collected by questionnaire &#8220 ; Healthy California Kids Survey&#8221 ; Section F, from California Department of Education, USA, are presented. Statistical methods are descriptive analysis, factor analysis and discriminative analysis. By factor analysis 5 factors have been extracted: (1) Lack of resiliency in domain of peers, local community and lack of problem solving skills and interpersonal skills. (2) Lack of engagement in out of school activities, no significant adult person at school, and no perspective. (3) Existence of family that establishes high expectations and clear boundaries, and adolescent with sense of value with plans for the future education. (4) Resilient adolescents with competencies and skills. (5) Caring and supportive family and quality relations with others. In the paper differences between sub-samples will be discussed (criteria will be the size of the town where adolescents live). The importance of the findings is in their applicability in creating of the programs for prevention of behavior disorders. The discussed strengths can be used as a base for primary prevention of behavior and conduct disorders with the purpose to reduce the risk factors in personal characteristics of an adolescent and in adolescent's environment.
