Stand Structure as the Main Indicator in the Elaboration of Management Plans

Stand is a part of the forest which is extracted from other sections of the forest according to the manner of formation, age, ratio and form of the mixture, tree species and the stand form and site class with an aim of regulating and implementation of specific manner of management. Stand structure is composed of all elements which are components of volume of wood and influence its distribution in space and time. Basic stand elements which are components of the stand structure and influence it, such as tree heights and their distribution, height and diameter increment of the stand, basal area of the stand, density and spatial distribution of stand trees, volume, i.e. volume of wood of the stand, species distribution, etc., are a result of growth intensity of the investigated tree species under the influence of natural laws and human interference. Through investigation of elements which are components of stand structure, research of governing regularity patterns among them, we simplify and promote, in terms of quality, the elaboration of management plans, whose main guidelines have been and should be in the future the following: -the preservation of forests through sustainable management, -complying with natural laws and assisting the forest in its development by supporting its autochtonism, -evaluation of the utility of forests and forest ecosystems for the purpose of overall benefits for man, who is one of its components.

Stand; stand structure; basic stand elements; management plan; sustainable management.
