Behavior As Risk Factor In Development Of Elementary School Children And Youth In The Republic Of Croatia

This poster presentation is a part of the scientific project "Models of intervention with purpose of preventing behavior disorders in children, youth and adults in the Republic of Croatia" held on Department of behavior disorders, Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Intentions of the researchers, involved in this part of the project, were to create the programs of prevention and early interventions regarding screened needs and potential of respondents. The purposes of presented part of the research (hypotheses) were: (1) to determine if the pupils in elementary schools manifest risk behavior, (2) there is significant statistic difference in risk behavior regarding the age of pupils. In the random sample there were 381 pupils from 4th and 5th grade (10-11 age) and 399 pupils from 7th and 8th grade (13-15 age). They were all from eight towns across the Republic of Croatia. In this presentation, the results presented, were collected by the Reactions and Behavior questionnaire. The used analysis were descriptive analysis, factor analysis and discriminative analysis. First main component of factor analysis points out "academic achievement" factor in both sub-samples. The differences between described two groups were statistically significant in direction as followed. The pupils in higher grades manifest more conduct disorders, while the younger pupils are more emotionally unstable and insecure. Those data refer that behavior, social and emotional competencies can be important part in the creating and implementing the primary prevention programs in elementary schools.
