Education role of Cratian childern's magazines

Croatian children’s literature is in its great part contained in children’s magazines. Almost everything in Croatian children’s literature was originally published in some of children’s magazines. The most important magazines are: Bosiljak - Basil (1864 – 1868), Smilje – Immortelle (1873 – 1945), Bršljan – Ivy (1873 – 1876, 1889 – 1903), Radost – Joy (1951 – present), Modra lasta - Blue Swallow (1954 – present) and Smib (1970 – present). This paper will discuss what role Croatian children’s magazines have had in the education of young readers toward animals. Until the end of the 1980’s, animals were presented as having some significance in human life. They were either good or bad, useful or harmful, etc. However, contemporary texts display some changes in approaches to animals. Animals are portrayed more realistically, the relationship between a child and his/her companion animal is emphasized, animals are situated in urban contexts, and children are taught about endangered species and the need for their protection.
