The Ecclesiastical Central Functions of Towns and Cities in the Late Medieval County of Vukovo
The ecclesiastical institutions and central functions very often played a significant role in the formation of medieval towns and cities. This especially applies to episcopal centres and places of pilgrimage, which, together with other urban settlements, shaped urban networks throughout the western parts of the Medieval Europe. In the High and Late Middle Ages, as pointed up by a number of authors, the communities of mendicant orders became the one of the key attributes of urban places. The most commonly used tool for the reconstruction and analysis of the urban network of the late medieval Hungary, the system devised by a renowned Hungarian historian András Kubinyi, acknowledges the importance of ecclesiastical central functions. This paper will discuss their significance for the reconstruction of a local urban network, according to Kubinyi’s system, on the example of towns and cities of the Vukovo County.
