Stakeholders Identification in Sustainable Tourism Destination Development: A Review of Recent Theory and Research

Although the stakeholders have been extensively analyzed and debated relating to the understanding of tourist destination sustainability, different authors agree that the topic of proper stakeholder identification within sustainable tourist destination remains rather unclear and still inadequately researched. In addition, recent practices showed that the implementation of sustainability principles is challenging, with the effective and necessary stakeholder’s management often failing. The presented research aims at providing a clarification of the connection between sustainable tourist destination development and stakeholders, as well as the proper identification of the stakeholders. The presented research indicates that the identification of the stakeholders is not a generalized category but instead it being articulated by considering the specificities of a particular tourist destination. The beneficiaries of the presented study, the destination management organizations, should be encouraged to engage the stakeholders that are suitable for a specific tourist destination, while respecting the uniqueness of a destination as well as its resources, the context of the environment, while relying on the on-site research and the selection of which stakeholders to engage in managing tourism driven projects and the developing of a sustainable tourist destination.
