High voltage electrical discharge - impact on germination of winter wheat under drought
The modern wheat breeding industry is mostly focused on the production of genotypes which show the quality of grain and flour, high grain yield and resistance to stalk lodging and environmental stresses including pathogens and different abiotic stress factors. Drought is the most often abiotic stress factor which causes huge economic loses in yields worldwide. Plants avoid drought by involving complex mechanisms which prevent the water loos, including a stronger root development. Early developmental stage like germination is especially sensitive to water shortage. Improvement of seed germination can be achieved by various non-destructive physical method that change the chemical properties of seed coat by creating a special wetting ability. In this study, we will use the polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) as drought inducer to the explore the drought impact on the germination of two winter wheat genotypes before high voltage electrical discharge (HVED) pre-treatment and after it. Moreover, we will use several different frequencies (Hz) to check the most efficient one. This study will provide a potential of HVED treatment in promoting the wheat germination under drought and give a better insight into drought tolerance of selected genotypes which could be beneficial for the breeders.
