PROMOTING RESILIENCE IN EDUCATION IN EUROPE: RESULTS OF ENRETE PROJECT

It is estimated that each year 38.2% of the EU population suffers from a mental health disorder. The cost of care and lost productivity is amounting to a staggering 277 billion euro. The burden of poor mental health is growing and is fuelled by long standing challenges such as social and economic inequalities as well as emerging challenges such as migration from conflict zones and cultural diversity. These phenomena have debilitating effects on individual’s wellbeing, but also on the cohesion and inclusiveness of European societies. The aftermath of the global financial crisis has also led to a renewed focus on efficiency and doing ‘more with less’. WHO recognizes that the promotion of mental health and the prevention of mental disorders are fundamental to safeguarding and enhancing the quality of life, well – being and productivity of individuals, families, workers and communities, thus increasing the strength and resilience of society as a whole. As over 50% mental health diseases has onset before adulthood, the need for investing in the development of programs to promote mental health and prevent mental and behaviour disorders in educational contexts, has been widely recognized across the globe. This paper will present project ENRETE (ENhancing REsilience in Teacher Education) which is aiming to strengthen the capacities of teachers to promote resilience and growth among vulnerable children. The consortium of six European universities have developed an innovative curricula for acquiring knowledge and skills for addressing the academic, social and emotional needs of children at risk, particularly children from minority communities, socially disadvantaged children and children with learning difficulties or special educational needs.
