Sažetak
Rijeka thermal power plant with its installed power of 320 MW is located southeast of the city of Rijeka, on the seashore. The cooling sea-water is pumped by two vertical axial pumps into the surface-type condenser. Detailed hydraulic analysis of the cooling-water system was conducted. Hydraulic head losses were calculated on each of the system elements and sea-water pumps performance characteristics were tested. Theoretical model of the cooling system was created and results were given by energy and hydraulic grade lines throughout the system. Discussing each head loss in the system and its cause gave answers for optimizing system performance. Minimizing cooling system&#8217 ; s influence on the environment, like water-foam forming at the outlet and mussel fouling in the system pipes, was also taken into account. The principal scope was to improve the cooling-water system performance by lowering the hydraulic head losses and consequently lowering used pump electrical power. The improvement was successfully achieved by removing the orifices installed in the system that the analysis showed to be useless
