Histological alteration of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis digestive gland induced by microplastics
The aim of this study was to describe the presence and effect of microplastic particles on the digestive gland of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 from native environments. Microplastic fragments and pellets were noticed in digestive glands of mussels from all investigated sites. Mussels exhibited a higher atrophy of digestive gland tissue with abundant content of lipofuscin granules. Future work will focus on investigating aquaculture areas in the Northern Adriatic Sea.
