Moving in, moving out: hominin dispersals in the Pleistocene
Humans are a highly adaptive and mobile species, and have been so for a very long time. Various types of data (including fossils, stone tools and accompanied radiometric dates) suggest that shortly after the appearance of our genus, people started moving out of Africa and have been doing so ever since. A clear cut, textbook version of temporal substitution of Homo erectus - Neandertals - Homo sapiens sapiens often suggested to be accompanied by distinct archaeological industries has been seriously questioned since the 1980's and with new data and insight we can begin to pinpoint specific, more detailed issues related to human dispersals in both temporal and spatial dimensions. This paper provides an overview of data from various fields that can contribute to the debate (e.g. fossils, archaeology sensu stricto, dating, aDNA, etc.) and tries to address specific issues and gaps in current approach to this issue(s).
