Biodegradation and ecotoxicity testing of microplastics
Nowadays, microplastic is widely spread in numerous ecosystems. Due to its exceptional strength, durability and resistance to external conditions and biodegradation, microplastic presents a major treat to environment. Microplastic toxicity and environmental presence have been studied to a greater extent in aquatic ecosystems, in comparison to terrestrial ecosystems. Microplastics causes a wide range of problems such as lower growth rate and movement, lower photosynthesis ability, physical deformation, fertility problems and changes in metabolic cycles. The aim of this work was to investigate the toxicity of polyethylene (PE) using algae Chlorella sp. and biodegradation of PE using bacteria Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa BSW.
