Toward possibilities of more democratic procedure in the closed world of classical ballet
The system of selection of children as potential ballet dancers – and later on from schooling to employment - is considered as an example of undemocratic procedures in the closed world of classical ballet from an anthropological perspective. Bodies are discussed since exclusively physical predispositions are considered at the auditions for admitting candidates to ballet world. Appropriate personality of candidates is not questioned. Individuals whose bodies do not match to the requirements set by institutionalised dance technique, philosophy, and politics, often will not pass the first level of selection. Within ballet standard, ballet tradition and institutionalized ballet rules, not all bodies are treated the same. To the premise that not all bodies are capable and deterministic for ballet, I will confront individual ability element reflected through the notions of aspiration, will, motivation and visualisation. Activating those notions and by virtue of rational/rationalization it is possible to change, adjust and enable body. If a segment of individual drive is recognized as a potential force to instruct the body, more democratic approach in admitting children in ballet schooling and ballet dancers in theatre, can be considered.
