Landscape Archaeology in Paklenica National Park and Velebit Nature Park (Croatia) – Basis for Inventorisation, Valorisation and Protection of Cultural Heritage
: In recent years the landscape archaeology brought new challenges to Croatian archeology. It certainly opened new perspectives and created a different approach to the study of landscapes and cultural heritage. The paper discusses the results of archaeological research conducted in the protected areas of the Republic of Croatia, Paklenica National Park, and Velebit Nature Park, karst landscapes of exceptional beauty that belong to the most attractive parts of the mountain Velebit (Zadar region). The research was induced by increasing devastation of mountain landscape (road construction and other infrastructure) which also destroyed cultural sites. Methods of landscape archaeology were applied in the research, particularly the archeological field survey, which was used for discovery, mapping and documenting sites and structures in the karst mountain area. Numerous spatial data have been collected on 383 various sites dating from prehistory to modern times. The elaboration of several professional studies, thematic maps and the use of geoinformation tools (GIS database) created an inventory and valorization of the cultural heritage of the researched area. The significance of such an ''register'' is multiple as it provides the basis for the protection of cultural heritage through prevention (registration by state institutions, spatial planning), presentation and use of cultural heritage for educational and tourism purposes as well as for the scientific research. Given the fact that tourism is the backbone of economic development of this area, cultural heritage thus becomes a valuable resource, the ie. basis for investment and creation of cultural attractions such as individual monuments and sites, archaeological parks as well as cultural landscapes.
