Newspaper and journal communication in the Australian Croatian community

Soon after settling in Australia, Australian Croatians began to fulfil their need for information by publishing newspapers, journals, and various newsletters. Historical circumstances were not always in favour of newly arrived migrants, laws were restrictive, living conditions harsh, and migrants’ knowledge of the English language poor. Publications in Croatian were not always well received by the Australian authorities, leading to instances where some items were banned. It is known, for example, that some publication titles existed but without an issue surviving, while others are well preserved and available in libraries and archives. Newspapers and journals published by Croatians in Australia provide a very important insight into the past. It is therefore crucial to systematically list all known titles in one place, in an online searchable database, so they can be further researched. This has already been partially achieved within the project Publishing activities of Croatian diaspora. The initial stages of the project focused on serial publications of Australian Croatians, and a bibliography was produced in the Koha library program based on the analysis of the library catalogue, and with the help of community members. The bibliography aims to be comprehensive, and it is structured so that additional information can be added at any time. The next stage of the project will focus on developing a bibliography of published books, which is somewhat more challenging as it is not always easy to trace published books, especially those that were published in small and private editions.
