Moderna praksa ponašanja s reziduima tijekom istraživačkog bušenja u naftnoj i plinskoj industriji u Republici Hrvatskoj

Republic of Croatia is the latest and one of the smaller members of the European Union in which the oil & gas were explored and gained since 1855. The first tar site in Croatia was mentioned 1391. Today, the national oil & gas company exploits some 54 oil & natural gas fields mostly in the geological region of Pannonian basin and from the northern Adriatic Sea bed (gas). Recently, Croatia started new investment cycles based on national energetic strategy and general plan and program of oil & gas exploration at land and sea. The new exploration drilling concessions were issued and work is to begin till the end of 2019. European Union environmental and radiation protection and oil & gas production Directives and new national regulatory framework regarding NORM (production of residues) from oil & gas industry are to be implemented into exploration and further production protocols if any. There is a need to investigate NORM originating from oil & gas production and to link the future production sites once again with geological underground in order to establish the well documented map of sites were residues are to be expected as by-product of the exploration drilling. Research work needs additional radiation protection attention due to possible high(er) content (activity concentration) of natural radionuclides from scale, sludge, production water or else which can form a new type of RadWaste environmental and public risk if not properly managed. During exploration, occupational protection and possible associated risk from residues are to be taken into account at the new drilling sites and at the existing industrial maintenance site where the tubings and other production equipment is cleaned from sludge and scale. The new European regulatory point of view developed to reduce the growth of passive industrial waste landfills and associated high costs, allows and encourages the reuse of this byproduct material in new products (building material or else.) respecting the ALARA and Precautionary principles. Development of fast, on site measurement methodology enabling radiological data preferably collected remotely by detectors carried by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) was started. In addition, the metrological relevance of crowd-sourced dose rate data originating from residues in scale and sludge inside tubings, collected by professional at GPS mapped production sites was investigated. The feasibility of long-term monitoring of production sites found to be burdened with residues using passive dosimetry systems was studied too. All those measuring protocols were merged in order to complete the knowledge of possible pathways of low dose exposure and possible ingestion of scale dust contributing to overall risk from residues in oil & gas industry in Croatia. The joint research and technological project covering all oil & gas production sites is to be established. Additionally to the geological and other environmentally, civil engineering and economically important data layers the results of the project should form a base for constructing the residue map layer of Republic Croatia.

NORM, residue, exposure, risk assessment, oil and gass exploration drilling
