Antimicrobial Stewardship: What to tell the patients and the general public

Antimicrobial stewardship interventions were initially intended for organizations, prescribers, and health and social care practitioners. However, it has been well documented that the knowledge and attitudes of both prescribing physicians and patients influence prescribing of antimicrobials. Thus, antimicrobial stewardship strategies should target both physicians and patients to ensure responsible use of antimicrobials. Strategies involving patients are mostly educational and have to be adapted to patients' age and level of education.
