2001: A Space Odyssey – Visual Analysis
This paper presents an attempt at visual analysis of Stanley Kubrick’s feature film "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). While theoretically grounded in general sociology of culture, psychoanalysis, cultural studies, and film theory, it is equally occupied with the extrinsic, formal elements of structural organization of the visual text, as with particular intrinsic points within the text, simultaneously aiming for a deconstructive reading of its formal structure, as well as for an analysis of its diegetic elements. The logic of this analysis particularly strives to align some of the prominent diegetic elements of the cinematic image as cultural motives pertinent to, and historically resonant with certain non-diegetic cultural phenomena characteristic of modernism.
