Emotions and Religion in Søren Kierkegaard: the analysis of a case (Genesis 22)

In this paper, I will discuss and hopefully go into a deeper analysis of the role of emotions in religion. Specifically, I will focus on the example of the analysis of a case from Genesis 22 which was interpreted in the work Fear and Trembling by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. It is about highly popular biblical episode from the Old Testament, precisely from the Book of Genesis, where the central role plays the ordeal of Abraham (a historical biblical character). Abraham was, by showing that he is willing to sacrifice his own son, supposed to – to put it blankly – prove or show his faith and love for God. This request from God surely raises many different emotions, and not just in Abraham himself and his loved ones but also in every religious reader as well as in every free- thinking person. Certainly this case can be seen from more than just one angle, there are several aspects in it and it needs to be analysed from different perspectives. The whole case ought to be reassessed from theological (religious), philosophical (especially ethical), and psychological perspective. Furthermore, this specific case should help us to assess more easily what are the place and role of emotions in religion.
