Royal power and magnates on the borderlands of the kingdom: The counts of Blagaj and anti- Ottoman defence at the beginning of the 1520s

The Counts of Blagaj were descendants of the noble Babonić family, which was one of the most powerful magnate families not only in medieval Slavonia, but in the whole medieval Realm of Saint Stephen (Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia), during the second half of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. During the second half of 15th and beginning of 16th century, they possessed huge estates in the valleys of Una and Sana rivers, i.e. in lower Slavonia. The very period is one of the most dramatic period of the history of areas around the valleys of rivers Una and Sana. The numerous Ottoman raids and continuous “small war” with long-lasting consequences mostly characterized this period. The main goal of this paper is to highlight the anti-Ottoman defense strategy of Counts of Blagaj in that period, i.e. its change in the beginning of 1520-ties. The main problem of their anti- Ottoman defense strategy was to secure the military and financially help from the kings of the medieval Realm of St Stephen, i.e. medieval Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia, or foreign Christian centers of power. Therefore, in this paper it is depicted the anti-Ottoman defense strategy of Counts of Blagaj since their estates were firstly endangered by Ottomans in the middle of 15th century, that is researched from whom they expected to received and eventually received financial and military help. Second question that arise is when did the Counts of Blagaj started to rely on the Habsburgs for help to protect and defense their estates, and what caused the change in their anti-Ottoman defense strategy. Finally, the differences in the relying on Habsburgs in the anti-Ottoman defense strategy between the Counts of Blagaj and the Croatian magnate families, such as the Frankapan family or Kurjaković family, should be depicted and the possible causes for this differences should be investigated.
